Don't let anyone steal your joy!

I have this poster hanging in my room. It might seem a little snarky, but the truth is it is really ME that needs this daily reminder most days and not the kids.
As teachers we can fall into the trap of letting a small moment or brief altercation with a kid totally ruin the rest of the day. We then continue that "bad day" mentality throughout the rest of the day letting it affect everything else. And, really, is that fair to the rest of the students that had nothing to do with that incident? My goal this year has been to really focus on letting go and laughing off the small stuff. If I have a really bad moment or a really, truly bad day, I try to send a positive parent email home before I leave. It honestly forces me to think about the kind, grateful, and bright students instead of dwelling on the negative.
As Marianne Williamson wrote, “Joy is what happens to us when we allow ourselves to recognize how good things really are.”
